Search Dog Teams – Leicestershire Search & Rescue is a specialist search and rescue team that helps emergency services find missing vulnerable adults and children and assists with rescues from remote areas of our country. We are on call 24 hours a day, with a team of over 50 people and sniffer dogs to respond across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

We have a number of search and rescue dogs in the team that are trained to Lowland Rescue National Standards:-

Most of our dogs are trained as aerial scent dogs as we are usually called to rural and uninhabited areas (where dogs are much quicker than humans to search). Dogs are trained to detect any human scent, and the training is built up in stages until the dogs are ready to carry out successful searches.

Training for all parts of the team requires hard work and dedication. Dogs are accepted to the training program after initial behavioral assessments. Then the dog and its handler must pass a nationally accredited assessment to participate in the search. Usually, the training takes place weekly, throughout the year, and it will take six months before the dog handler/support reaches qualification requirements and approx. two years before a dog team is ready to be nationally ranked.

K9 dogs are the handler’s own pets, so they cover all the usual costs such as food etc. we offer K9 insurance, PPE for both handler and dog; this costs around £500 a year per K9.

Our foot teams do every single search, efficiently searching for boots on the ground. A team has been deployed on almost all calls, a team consisting of a team leader, radio operator, first aider and qualified search technician. All new members must complete Ground Searcher skills training (a six month process) to enable them to become qualified search technicians and be deployed on operations. All team members must continue to demonstrate their field search skills on a regular basis.

Ground Search Teams can be deployed in both urban and rural areas, and spend from one to six hours searching in forests, fields, parks, riverbanks and similar environments. The teams are deployed at any time of the day, regardless of the weather, and must be self-sufficient in equipment, food and water.

The other special units complement the foot teams, so that the units between them provide the fastest, most comprehensive and effective response to calls.

If you think you have any of the skills and attributes mentioned above, we’d love to hear from you!

UAVs (sometimes called “drones”) have great potential to help us search areas that are otherwise inaccessible for health and safety or other reasons such as swamps, roads, growing crops or waterways.

This is an exciting new development for us and we are happy to have purchased our new team drone, which has a speaker system, searchlight and has FLIR capability (thermal imaging to register heat sources) Several teams have already had missing person location drones.

Our command team consists of search planners and search leaders who manage the incident we are called to.

Planners use specialist mapping to plan search areas using missing person data and direct information from the police.

The team manages which resources are deployed where and records all parts of the search, including radio messages, event logs and a decision log.

Search managers perform this function, but their primary role is to have operational oversight of the incident and review all actions and decisions required of effective incident commanders.

The command team uses licensed mapping software and other consumables such as printer ink, paper etc. These costs are around £500 a year

Search and rescue dogs are a valuable resource in wilderness, natural disasters, mass accidents and in locating missing persons. Dedicated handlers and well-trained dogs are required to be effective in the search work. Search and rescue dogs are usually operated by a small team on foot.

Search and rescue dogs detect human scent. Although the exact processes are still being researched, scent may include skin rafts (odor-bearing skin cells that remove living humans at a rate of about 40,000 cells per minute), evaporated sweat, respiratory gases, or decomposition gases released by bacterial action on human skin or fabrics.

All dogs are family pets trained to the high standards of the National Search and Rescue Dog Association. The dog team is not separated from the main team, but they train more often separately from the main team, as well as standard team training. Training a dog takes time and commitment.
